Geophysical Surveys

Detailed surveys and assessments of the seabed and sub-seabed are critical to the costeffective design of marine structures and subsea installations.
Fugro’s international fleet of strategically located geophysical survey vessels and geoscience teams provide our clients with the best geophysical data acquisition and interpretation services including:

  • Bathymetric charting of the sea floor for safety-critical and engineering applications
  • Locating and identifying man-made artefacts such as debris, shipwrecks and sub-sea structures
  • Profiling shallow geologic features and structures to assist with engineering studies and facilities design
  • Seabed and sub-surface geotechnical assessments
  • Locating and identifying geohazards to ensure safe and efficient exploration drilling, facilities installation and production operations
In addition to data acquisition, Fugro provides a comprehensive desktop study and geoscience consulting service. These services use all available data, including 3D exploration seismic data, to give our clients the timely planning information that ensures project success.
Fugro’s comprehensive data processing, interpretation and presentation services provide our clients with results in quality-assured formats, including concise reports and userfriendly graphics, traditional paper charts and in digital formats.

Pre-Installation Surveys

A survey and seabed inspection, performed shortly before the start of engineering work, ensures that the work area is properly prepared and clear of obstructions, and that all potential hazards to operations are correctly identified and located.

Geohazard Surveys

For safe exploration and production activities, Fugro’s high-resolution geophysical systems such as HR2D and Short Offset HR3D, are used to identify and map geohazards. These include, for instance, shallow gas, active faulting zones and areas of potential hydrates. A combination of high-resolution geophysical surveying and geotechnical investigation provides further information on seabed conditions to aid in predicting jack-up leg penetration, anchor-holding capacity and for foundation engineering studies.

Pipeline Route Surveys

Detailed corridor mapping provides the essential raw data for the design and installation of sub-sea linear structures, such as oil and gas pipelines, flow lines and umbilicals.

Seabed sampling tools, Cone Penetrometer Testing CPT) and high-resolution geophysical systems, provide information on the structure of the seabed. For burial assessment and trenching evaluation, advanced tools such as Fugro’s GAMBAS seabed seismic refraction and ROBAS resistivity systems provide detailed stratigraphic data for correlation with CPT information for even greater confidence.

Mineral Surveys

The exploration for valuable seafloor minerals demands leading-edge technology. Fugro’s high-resolution geophysical systems and geotechnical sampling programs provide the deep-sea minerals explorer with detailed and comprehensive views of ocean floor structures and surface texture to assist with the identification of deposits and the design of optimal recovery solutions.

Port, Harbour and Coastal Surveys

A range of specialist inshore survey systems, vessels and expert teams are available to meet the requirements of the port and coastal engineering community, including:

  • Hydrographic surveys
  • Navigation and conservancy surveys
  • Surveys and support services for dredging works
  • Monitoring services for beach and foreshores, sediment movement and material recycling

Charting and UNCLOS Surveys

Detailed charts of the seabed and sub-sea geophysical information aid the evaluation of precious national assets and in the definition of international maritime boundaries. Fugro’s fleets of survey vessels, autonomous underwater vehicles and SHOALS LIDAR aircraft are equipped with the latest technology to provide a comprehensive seabed charting service at scales suitable for all applications including Exclusive Economic Zone, UNCLOS Article 76 assessments and bathymetric charting surveys.

Geographical Information Systems

Centres of excellence such as our GeoSoft Solutions group, develop GIS based outcomes for a wide range of client types and marine applications. ESRI's ArcView and similar advanced GIS systems are populated with bespoke information with additional functionality to deliver a powerful cost-effective answer to marine asset management for:

  • Port and harbour authorities
  • Marine transport industry
  • Offshore energy companies
  • Renewable energy industry
Typical applications include:
  • Marine asset management and tracking
  • Vessel monitoring
  • Electronic navigation chart enhancements and databases
  • Real-time display and querying of Automatic Identification System (AIS)
  • Digital atlases
